About the Foundation
The Anne Burrows Music Foundation, originally called the Angela Cheng Musical Foundation, is a non-profit organization founded in 1979 by the late Dr. Anne Burrows, the late Jenny Diment, Dr. Mary Lee, Mary Yiu, and Winnie Yiu-Young to assist pianist Angela Cheng in studying at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
After Ms. Cheng successfully achieved her dream of becoming a concert pianist, ABMF expanded to become a volunteer-operated organization which provides tuition support to young musicians from the Edmonton area, including those who have left Edmonton to further their musical education elsewhere. Over the past 36 years, the Foundation and the Friends of the Foundation have provided over $1 million in scholarships to more than 100 musicians.
Dr. Anne Burrows remained the Chairperson of the Foundation until her retirement in the early 1980s. Dr. Faqir Khanna, a retired Professor of Physics at the University of Alberta, took over chairmanship until his retirement in 2013, after which Winnie Yiu-Young, a retired Chief Financial Officer from the Alberta Government, took over the role. She remains the President of the Anne Burrows Music Foundation today.
