His performance at the Milton Court Concert Hall in London, UK, will be part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra Total Immersion concert in which they will be performing all of Hillborg's pieces. Current scholarship recipient, Kerry Waller, had the chance to play with the world renowned cellist, Ivan Monighetti in Santander, Spain in July 2019!
Ivan was a top prizewinner in many international competitions including the 1974 Tchaikovsky competition, and has since enjoyed a career which has taken him all over Europe, America and Japan. His sensational appearances at numerous contemporary music festivals have brought him a wide reputation as one of the leading figures in the field of modern music. He is also highly respected for his expertise in the performance practice of the 18th and 19th centuries and is the founding director of the Moscow early music festival. Kerry is a talented pianist himself, currently attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK, We're looking forward to following his developing career! Former ABMF Scholarship recipient, Maria Millar, and her partner, Shawn Wyckoff, have teamed up under the stage name Sonic Escape, pushing the boundaries of music through original, inspirational performances featuring flute & violin.
Sonic Escape will be kicking off the Fairmont Chamber Music Society’s concert season in West Virginia before heading back to Toronto to create 6 music videos of their new compositions. Thanks to an award from Canada Council for the Arts, they will be filming everything from live, interactive world premieres to choreographed outdoor shoots! In addition, Maria’s arrangement of Sakura was just licensed for a first run of 12,400 printings as part of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music’s new curriculum! Sold in 93 countries, Sakura will introduce violinists around the world to Maria’s technique of transforming the sound of a violin into a koto/shamisen. Motorists stranded in a snowstorm on Highway 1 were treated to an impromptu performance by former ABMF scholarship recipient and distinguished trumpeter, Jens Lindemann in October 2018! Congratulations to Ewald Cheung, violinist and former ABMF scholarship recipient, for becoming a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Fall 2018!
Just this past weekend, he gave a beautiful performance of Dvorak's Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major at the Summer Solstice Music Festival, alongside fellow musicians Robert Uchida (violin), Juan-Miguel Hernandez (viola), Rafael Hoekman (cello), and Patricia Tao (piano). Former ABMF recipient, Mikolaj Warszynsky, is in the midst of his European recital tour! On May 26, 2018, he performed 3 archival prints at the Liszt Museum in Budapest, which will be included in his upcoming Lisztomania CD, to be released on September 1, 2018. On June 9, 2018, he will be performing in St-Merry church in Paris as part of the Accueil Musicale concert season. The recital will also mark the European release of his previous album for the French label, Anima Records. Congratulations Mikolaj!
Sonic Escape, a flute & violin duo featuring former ABMF scholarship recipient, Maria Millar, and her partner, Shawn Wyckoff, have premiered their YouTube series: Sonic Escape’s Guide to Performing! With this series, they're looking to create an online platform that engages audiences before, during and after the show. Their target is young instrumentalists, who form the majority of their monthly subscribers. They currently have approximately 150 subscribers, and hope to use this series to grow this community and get them to their concerts! Sonic Escape has also hit the road for 14 concerts, school shows, and outreach events in Detroit Lakes MN, Fargo ND, Sioux Lookout ON and Dryden ON. Congrats to drum artist Karl Schwonik, who has recently received a number of accolades. In June 2017, he was included in CBC's list of the 35 best Canadian jazz artists under 35!
His band was also named the winner of the 2017 Reinstein Jazz Competition hosted by the University of Cambridge. This is one of the top competitions in Europe and comes with a cash prize as well as a performance at a London jazz club. Finally, he will be moving to the city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, in August, to take on an Associate Dean position at Medicine Hat College! |
